The Director of TIMES publishing house and its editorial team were astonished when they first received a “substantial English manuscript” of more than 400 pages written by a 13-year-old author. Previously, the longest manuscripts submitted by young writers had been around 100 pages. Even more impressive, this manuscript marks only the beginning of a long-running series. Recognizing the potential of a large-scale English novel series, TIMES Publishing House officially published A World Divided — the debut work of Trí Dũng (9Zurich).

Having earned the Dewey Talent Scholarship for three consecutive years and being a familiar face in academic competitions, many might assume that Trí Dũng’s world revolves solely around textbooks. However, this young student is far more versatile: at times a determined competitive swimmer, at others an expressive pianist, and notably, a young writer passionate about the fantasy genre.

Dũng’s writing journey began by chance when he “accidentally” wrote 12 pages for an essay on mythology. Ms. Downing Grace, a Humanities teacher, was surprised by his writing ability and became the first person to encourage him to try writing a book.

Dũng began writing A World Divided when he was in Grade 7. Inspired by magical worlds such as Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, he gradually crafted the adventure of the character Chris Crough. Without reminders or pressure from anyone, Dũng dedicated one hour every evening to writing.

Ideas came to him naturally, supported by the rich vocabulary and expressive language he accumulated through his reading habit. Dũng shared that he has never faced language barriers. From primary school, he became accustomed to presenting in English and using the language as a tool for self-learning, research, and classroom projects. “In every English lesson, our teacher usually sets aside 10 minutes for reading and discussion. Instead of approaching knowledge purely through textbooks, Humanities topics are connected to specific books, giving us opportunities to reflect and develop our own understanding,” Dũng explained.

Editor Lê Thắm from TIMES Publishing House also praised Dũng for his strong personality, independent thinking, and critical mindset. “During the collaboration with illustrators and the publishing team, Dũng demonstrated initiative, actively discussing and debating to select the most suitable book cover and illustrations.”

Aspiring to pursue higher education in the United States, Trí Dũng hopes his debut novel and passion for writing will serve as a bridge toward achieving his goals. He also plans to donate all book sale profits to The Dewey West of West Lake Community Fund, hoping to support and inspire less fortunate children. Dũng’s book also conveys a message to young creative minds, as he once wrote: “Don’t let creativity fall asleep or fade away within you. You may be busy or hesitant, but be brave enough to try. Trying is always better than standing still and doing nothing. Even if you fail, it is still an opportunity to become a better version of yourself.”

Last week, Grade 4 parents at FV88 It Com Hải Phòng set aside their busy routines to “turn back time” and become students once again in a very special classroom – the Literature & Vietnamese project presentation titled “What I Care About.” The “teachers” of that class were only 10 years old, yet they confidently led their sessions, presenting lessons through their own voices and perspectives.

Each “lesson” unfolded a different facet of contemporary life: from sharing household responsibilities and the tradition of lucky money during Lunar New Year, to global concerns such as illegal wildlife hunting, environmental pollution, and traffic safety. All topics were independently selected, researched, and presented by Grade 4 students with authentic thinking, intellectual independence, and thoughtful reflection.

Notably, each young “teacher” demonstrated a distinct teaching style. Some incorporated dramatization to convey messages vividly; others relied on compelling data and statistics to strengthen their arguments; many posed thought-provoking questions to engage parents in active dialogue. Behind every presentation was a meaningful journey of self-directed learning — a process of acquiring, internalizing, and transforming knowledge into personal viewpoints through diverse modes of expression.

The classroom atmosphere became even more dynamic during the debate session. Challenging questions such as, “What do you think about men’s responsibility in household work?” or “Should highly individualistic students strictly follow classroom rules?” sparked candid, multi-dimensional discussions. Innocent yet assertive statements like, “Real men should share household responsibilities with women,” or “Respecting differences still requires discipline and good habits,” clearly reflected the development of critical thinking skills in progress.

“The children are exposed to global issues, which greatly broaden their life perspectives. They proactively explore topics that previous generations might have avoided. The self-research and peer-teaching model at Dewey is a two-way learning approach that I find highly effective, helping students deeply understand the essence of knowledge,” shared Ms. Nguyễn Thị Huyền Hòa, parent of Nguyễn Mai Trang (Class 4 Queenstown), after the session.

Beyond the boundaries of textbooks, Primary students at FV88 It Com learn through experience and grow through thinking via Literature & Vietnamese projects such as the Lyrical Poetry Seminar, the “Voices of Hands” Exhibition, and the “What I Care About” Presentation. With a well-structured curriculum, each student not only accumulates knowledge but also gradually cultivates sharp critical thinking, intentional reflection, and a compassionate heart that cares for the community — essential foundations for confidently navigating an ever-changing world.

Lunar New Year for children is a time of family reunion, joyful play with siblings, and receiving bright red lucky envelopes carrying heartfelt New Year wishes. But not every child is fortunate enough to have that experience. For the children attending the charity class at Hai Phong Diocese Cathedral, Tet passes quietly like any ordinary day. New gifts and New Year greetings can sometimes feel like a luxury.

Moved by sincere empathy for these underprivileged children, students from the Community Service Leadership Club of FV88 It Com Hai Phong launched a volunteer project titled “From You to New” with the companionship and guidance of their teachers.

Over four months, more than 10 fundraising events were organized, featuring handmade products such as crochet keychains, wool flowers, homemade cacao, and more. With the support of parents, the project provided essential supplies, sweets, New Year greeting cards, and financial assistance to five orphaned children.

Trinh Khanh Linh (Grade 11 Atlanta), serving as Project Leader, shared emotionally: “I feel very warm being able to join everyone in helping the children, even in a small way. Although they are young, they are very understanding. I hope that each year, through different volunteer projects, we will be able to help even more people. True to the name ‘From You to New’ – a new beginning starts from each individual, from small actions that can spread into meaningful value.”

The project not only delivered material gifts but also nurtured seeds of compassion in every Dewey student’s heart. Their journey of growth at Dewey goes beyond knowledge and skills; it is also about cultivating empathy, responsibility, and love. Because a truly holistic education is one where a “cool head” and a “warm heart” are nurtured together, so that every student grows up not only capable but also committed to living for the community.

“Around us, leaves and flowers sing heartfelt melodies

Sunlight smiles and sparkles brightly

May everything go as wished, with radiant smiles on our lips”

On the first day back at Dewey after the Tet holiday, the familiar cheerful melody once again echoed through the hallways. Blending with laughter, lively New Year wishes, and playful words of thanks when receiving lucky money, it created a vibrant spring-opening picture at FV88 It Com Hải Phòng.

Each classroom carried its own “shade” of joy. For Grade 5 Cairo, it was the “heart-racing” moments following every spin of the lucky wheel. Each time the pointer stopped, waves of excited cheers filled the room. “Lucky money,” “01 homework pass,” or “free seat change for one lesson” – simple rewards, yet enough to ignite the whole class with positive energy for the first morning of the new year.

Meanwhile, Grade 3 New Delhi welcomed spring in their own unique way. Instead of red envelopes, each student received a green seedling from Ms. Linh, carrying wishes for a healthy new year and daily growth—just like a tiny sprout reaching up toward the sunlight.

The first lesson after Tet concluded with sweet chocolate coins, lingering echoes of joy and positive energy remaining in every classroom. A new spring has truly begun, starting with laughter and hearts full of excitement. Wishing the little warriors of Dewey Hai Phong a brilliant and breakthrough new year, confidently conquering new achievements.

In recent times, Dewey Hai Phong students have continued to leave their mark across numerous national and international academic arenas, such as the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, the FISO Online Olympiad, the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO), BBB, as well as Student Excellence Competitions at various levels. Each competition carries its own characteristics, yet all require a strong knowledge foundation, logical and critical thinking, and a high level of flexible application.

These achievements stem not only from students’ individual efforts or their persistent self-learning spirit, but also from a consistently implemented educational approach. At Dewey Hai Phong, experiential education does not stop at supplementary activities; instead, it becomes a pathway that enables students to actively access knowledge: learning through interdisciplinary projects, the creation of real-world products, questioning, experimentation, reflection, and reporting. This multidimensional learning process helps students gain a deep understanding of core concepts, develop analytical thinking, and build the ability to connect knowledge—key competencies for tackling complex academic challenges in international competitions.

The School respectfully acknowledges and honors the students’ serious efforts in conquering important academic milestones. These are the initial “small victories” that bring students closer to greater achievements, forming a foundation for independent thinking and adaptability wherever they may be in the world.

———————–

The Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge was first organized in Lithuania in 2004 and later expanded worldwide. Each year, the competition attracts millions of participants from around 60 countries, becoming one of the most widely recognized extracurricular activities globally in technology education for students.

The Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) is an intellectual competition for students from preschool to upper secondary levels, with participants from many countries such as Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, and others.

The Future Intelligence Students Olympiad (FISO) is an international academic competition organized by the FISO Olympiad team (United States), aiming to develop critical thinking, reasoning abilities, and broaden students’ global perspectives.

Big Bay Bei (BBB) is an international mathematics olympiad organized by the Olympiad Champion Education Center of Hong Kong to nurture a love for mathematics and creative thinking among students.

The City-level Student Excellence Competition, organized by the Department of Education and Training, is an in-depth academic platform designed to identify and nurture students with outstanding capabilities.

Recently, Khôi Nguyên (Class 11Denton) and Đức Cường (Class 10Victoria) achieved outstanding success by winning the Gold Medal at the International Intellectual Property, Invention, Innovation and Technology Exposition (IPITEx) 2026*, and were further honored with a Special Award presented by Euro Business (Poland) for their impressive project. Surpassing hundreds of competing teams from many countries, the students’ project affirmed the strong capability of Vietnamese students to apply artificial intelligence (AI) on the international stage, while powerfully conveying a message about the younger generation’s responsibility in addressing pressing societal challenges.

VINH-DANH-1

Originating from a deep concern for community health issues, the team researched and developed a technology-based healthcare support system. Khôi Nguyên shared, “This solution aims to assist users in daily activities, monitor health conditions, and help maintain both physical and mental functions. By applying modern technologies, the system serves as a supportive tool that enhances quality of life and alleviates the burden on both patients and caregivers.”

A key highlight of the project lies in its integration of multiple functions within a user-friendly, intuitive interface, while maintaining low operating costs through the use of open-source technologies such as Python, TensorFlow, Keras, and MediaPipe. The project’s creativity, scientific value, strong practical applicability, and community-oriented goals earned high praise from the IPITEx 2026 judging panel.

Competing in a large-scale international arena, Khôi Nguyên and Đức Cường demonstrated remarkable confidence in communication, presentation, and academic debate in specialized English with judges, experts, and international peers. Đức Cường noted that this confidence was cultivated through project-based learning, experiential activities, and the open academic environment at FV88 It Com. Before this, neither student had participated in an international invention competition. IPITEx 2026 thus became a valuable opportunity for them to learn, gain exposure, and engage with professional research and scientific publication processes.

The success of Dewey students at IPITEx 2026 reaffirms their strong international integration capabilities in the fields of Science and Technology. It also represents the “sweet fruit” of a journey of learning and experiential education at FV88 It Com, contributing to the cultivation of high-quality human resources for the future of the nation.

______________

*IPITEx 2026 is held within the framework of Thailand Inventors’ Day 2026, one of the region’s most prestigious academic and innovation events, organized annually by the Government of Thailand. The competition attracted 120 organizations from 24 countries, including nations with advanced science and technology sectors such as Canada, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Romania. Beyond being a science and technology competition, IPITEx also serves as a forum for knowledge exchange, collaboration promotion, and the introduction of highly applicable, real-world solutions.

As the New Year approaches, students from Class 12 Washington DC and 12 San Jose at Dewey Hai Phong have officially “closed the books” with a total scholarship value of nearly 30 billion VND from prestigious universities both domestically and internationally, including the University of Ottawa, University of Technology Sydney, University of Wollongong, VinUniversity, and British University Vietnam,…

No fireworks, no festive gifts—nearly 30 billion VND in scholarships is the most impressive “lì xì” the students could offer to their teachers and the School. This remarkable figure is the result of persistent academic dedication and well-structured personal profile strategies developed by both students and the teaching team. Above all, it stands as proof of a generation willing to think boldly, take risks, and conquer challenges with real capability.

The New Year opens not only with fireworks, but with university doors already wide open. Congratulations to all the warriors—may you step into the world in the coming year with a “genetic code” ready to learn, ready to conquer, and ready to shape your own identity.

In the first week back to school after the Lunar New Year holiday, TDSers had the pleasure of welcoming special “first-foot” guests to kick off the year. The atmosphere at the Tây Hồ Tây campus became more vibrant than ever with the arrival of more than 60 students and teachers from Mount Vernon School (MVS), Dewey’s strategic partner in the United States. This annual exchange program aims to strengthen the sustainable partnership between the two schools, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and deepening mutual friendship.

Many MVS students shared that from the moment they stepped onto campus, they were pleasantly surprised by the radiant smiles, warm waves, and thoughtful welcome gifts prepared by Dewey students. Prior to the visit, TDSers and their teachers had set up interactive booths featuring festive cuisine, traditional folk games, and cultural attire to introduce the beauty of Vietnamese and Korean Lunar New Year traditions to their new friends. Emmy Heller and Rachel Adams were particularly fascinated by a samulnori drum performance presented by Korean students. Teacher Ben Potter excitedly showed off a piece of calligraphy featuring his name, while Asiah Franklyn expressed her delight at trying bamboo dancing for the first time, tasting coconut candy, and sampling traditional Vietnamese Tet dishes.

As a senior currently enrolled in online Adventure Program courses delivered by Mount Vernon at Dewey, Minh Ngọc (12Austin) shared that this visit offered her a valuable opportunity to meet in person the MVS teachers who have been instructing her virtually. “Despite differences in geography, time zones, and culture, Mount Vernon teachers are always open-minded, respectful of diversity, and eager to connect,” she said. Ngọc also noted that candid conversations with MVS students provided her and her peers with deeper insights into academic life and student experiences in the United States. This perspective is especially meaningful for those planning to study abroad, helping them better prepare for their future journeys.

Reflecting on the significance of the visit, Ms. Shaina Neal, Head of international school & Academic Director of ES English, emphasized, “Alongside an American-standard curriculum, Dewey students are nurtured to develop confidence, communication skills, adaptability, and open-minded thinking—essential qualities of a global citizen in the 21st century. Building relationships and expanding networks are equally important. The more people our students connect with, the more opportunities they will have in the future.”

The visit from Mount Vernon students created a vibrant, multicultural celebration and further inspired Dewey students to embrace global integration with confidence. Learning within an American-standard environment, connecting across borders, and engaging in authentic, real-world experiences together form a strong foundation that empowers them to step into the world as capable and resilient global citizens.
